Potential GRT Strike: What You Need to Know

Update – May 1, 2026: A tentative agreement has been reached between the Region of Waterloo and Unifor Local 4304. GRT bus service will continue as usual, provided the deal is ratified by union members on May 3. If things change, we will keep you updated at wusa.ca/grt-strike and on socials @yourwusa.
On April 20, WUSA was made aware of a potential strike that could affect Grand River Transit (GRT) workers. If an agreement is not met, Unifor Local 4304, the union representing many GRT workers, will be in a legal strike position as of May 1.
What does this mean for students?
If a strike occurs, all GRT bus and MobilityPLUS services will be suspended. ION train service will continue to operate and trains will run on a regular schedule. If there is an ION service disruption, replacement bus shuttles will not be available.
We are actively monitoring the situation and will keep you updated as we learn more. For more information and to learn how you can start planning alternative transportation in the event of a strike, visit wusa.ca/grt-strike.
