WalkSafe is Here! Your Safety, Your Community

A group of people walk together at night outside a lit building with text reading “Don’t walk alone”.

We’re excited to launch WalkSafe, a new initiative designed to help students feel safer and more supported when moving around Waterloo’s main campus. WalkSafe is a pilot program, running from March 2 to April 2 to test the feasibility of the program.

Whether you’re going between classes, leaving an evening event, or simply feel more comfortable walking with someone, WalkSafe is here for you.

What is WalkSafe?

WalkSafe is a free service that provides students with a safe walking companion during evening and late-night hours. Two trained volunteers will accompany students to locations on and around campus, helping reduce the stress and uncertainty that can come with walking alone at night.

The program is built around three key principles:

  • Safety – Creating a visible, reliable support system for students.
  • Accessibility – Making the service easy to request and use.
  • Community Care – Encouraging a campus culture where looking out for one another is the norm.

Why WalkSafe Matters

Student safety is a shared responsibility. While campus remains a generally safe environment, we know that many students experience anxiety about walking alone at night. WalkSafe aims to:

  • Increase peace of mind
  • Reduce barriers to participating in evening activities
  • Support students who may feel vulnerable traveling alone
  • Foster a stronger sense of belonging and community

By offering a simple and supportive solution, WalkSafe empowers students to move confidently through their campus experience.

How It Works

Between March 2 and April 2, students will be able to request a WalkSafe companion during the hours of 7 PM to 10 PM on weeknights. Once requested, a trained volunteer will meet the student at an agreed-upon location and walk with them to their destination within the service boundaries.

WalkSafe offers customizable options too including:

  • Quiet walks – walks with minimal conversation, unless needed for safety or check-ins.
  • Extra space walks – walks where the volunteers follow slightly behind or give extra spaces while remaining nearby for support.
  • Phone support instead of a walk – a volunteer stays on the phone with you while you walk on your own.

How Can You Get Involved?

WalkSafe isn’t just a service; it’s a community initiative. Students who are interested in contributing to a safer campus environment will also have the opportunity to volunteer with the program.

If you use the program, give us your feedback to help us improve and shape it for the future. Anyone who uses WalkSafe will be given the opportunity to fill out a short survey after they’ve used the service.

WalkSafe officially launches March 2. More detailed information about service hours, operating boundaries, and how to request a walk can be found on the WalkSafe webpage!

We’re proud to introduce a program that prioritizes student well-being and strengthens the culture of care on campus. Together, we can make our community safer, one walk at a time.
