December 2024 Update

Modern building with glass facade, snowy tree, and text about December Board Update: Responsible Partnerships & Investments 2024.

On November 27, WUSA President Nick Pfeifle met with the chairs and co-chairs and other representatives from the Task Force on Principles for Institutional Partnerships and the Task Force on Social Responsibility in Investing to formally present the results of the referendum. Nick also attended the Task Force Forum on November 14 and spoke about the importance of student perspectives in endowment control and the unique relationship that Waterloo has with its student endowments.

In addition, Nick met with the communications team at UWAHRP to update them on the work completed to date relating to the referendum.  He has also engaged in discussions with senior leadership including Dr. Jagdeep Singh Bachher and representatives from the University of California about their endowment investments. Nick emphasized the importance of institutions being responsive to their students both at the University of California and the University of Waterloo.

WUSA’s Advocacy team is continuing to work with WUSA’s President and Vice President to communicate referendum results and student expectations about next steps to the University through existing channels, such as the Senate.  Updates on this work will be shared with the Board.

Many members of our campus community have connections to Israel, Palestine, and other parts of the world experiencing violence. We recognize the impact ongoing wars have on them, their families, and their friends.  It’s important to stay informed, seek out reliable sources, and have meaningful, respectful conversations with your peers. Be compassionate, even when you have differing views or opinions.

If you need support, WUSA offers resources such as Empower Me, where you can find someone to talk to 24/7. You can also reach out to Campus Wellness and Counselling Services or find your community through one of our many student clubs or services.

You can continue to find updates on the progress of our work with these referendum results through Board Meeting recaps and on https://wusa.ca/referendum-2024/.
