Items of Business
Disbanding the Governance Committee
Following the 2025-2026 Governance Reform Project, it was determined that many significant governance policy discussions would regularly get re-litigated at Board meetings. Board understands its important role in these matters. It was determined that it was the right move to eliminate the committee and instead have bi-monthly meetings of interested Board members where ideas for policy changes can be deliberated before they reach the full Board.
Executive Director Report
- The Executive Director shared that operationally the capital fees would be amalgamated with the operational fees. She noted that further information and announcement of the change would go out in August of 2026.
- As a part of her report, the Executive Director featured a Student Publications Department Update which detailed the work, growth, and next steps of the student publications around campus.
President Report
- President Damian Mikhail commended the second “Politics Without the Podium” that allowed students the opportunity to connect and ask questions to Waterloo Mayor Dorothy McCabe and Colleen James, Regional Councillor for the Region of Waterloo.
- In relation to his work on Senate, he noted fellow Senator Andrew Chang had put forth a motion to create an $800,000 grant to increase bursary awards for students. However, the motion was rejected from the Senate, and instead the Senators moved a motion to have administration seek data on the true impact of OSAP cuts to students, recommendations on mitigating such impacts, and report the findings back to the Senate floor.
- Director Skylar Duggan asked how WUSA would be maintaining engagement on the OSAP cuts. The President answered that it’d be best to keep relevance high within the Spring term to allow the Board to take greater action in the Fall semester.
Vice President Report
- Vice President Remington Aginskaya-Zhi shared that they, alongside the President and a few Directors, had gone to Queen’s Park to observe the NDP and Marit Stiles’ motion on repealing the OSAP cuts. While the vote had failed, the President took the opportunity to help push media on the cuts and votes, alongside fellow student leaders.
Director Reports
- Director Muhammad Kanji noted that the Engineering Society would potentially be holding a referendum at the end of April to review their fee structure and include an optional fee to support capital projects and sponsorships.
