UW MEDLIFE is a student-run club aiming to support low-income communities in Latin America and Africa through raising awareness of global health and development issues, collecting donations, and volunteering at home and abroad. Due to the current circumstances in Afghanistan, Canada will be accepting 40,000 refugees from Afghanistan to seek refuge from the Taliban Rule. Canada is focusing on bringing and looking for expanded resettlement efforts which will focus on women, girls, LGBTQ Afghans, and people belonging to ethnic and religious minorities, which has been targeted by the Taliban in the past. These individuals are coming to Canada in a difficult time without many belongings and we hope that this donation initiative would ease their transition to Canada. Due to harsh winters, winter clothes would be beneficial to the families and food gift cards would allow them to purchase items of their choice. We are partnering with The Waterloo Region Immigration Partnership and Kitchener waterloo community foundation, who are working towards providing the refugees with resources the need to settle in. WUSA recognizes that much of the work we do happens on the traditional territory of the neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. The land we work on is covered by the Between the Lakes Treaty, No. 3 (1792), and this region is still home to First Nation, Inuit, and Metis peoples from across Turtle Island. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work, play and live on this land and acknowledge that it is our collective responsibility to make our community and world a better place for all people. We acknowledge that educational institutions have not been a safe space for Indigenous students in the past and we continue to work to ensure that this is no longer the case.
