March 31 marks Trans Day of Visibility (TDOV), a global day dedicated to celebrating trans, nonbinary, and gender-diverse people, while also recognizing the realities they continue to face. 

TDOV is about visibility, but also about community, recognition, and action. It highlights the achievements and contributions of trans individuals, while drawing attention to ongoing challenges such as discrimination, misinformation, and barriers to safety and inclusion. 

On campus, this day is an opportunity to reflect on how we can build a more supportive and inclusive environment for trans students, not just today, but every day. 

Why Visibility Matters

For many trans people, being visible can be empowering, but it can also come with risk. That’s why TDOV is both a celebration and a reminder. 

Visibility helps: 

• Challenge harmful stereotypes  
• Amplify trans voices and experiences  
• Foster understanding within our campus community  

At the same time, it calls on all of us to move beyond awareness and take meaningful steps toward inclusion. 

How You Can Show Support

Supporting trans communities doesn’t have to be complicated. Small, intentional actions can make a big difference. 

Learn and listen
Take time to learn about gender diversity and trans experiences. Listening to trans voices through stories, events, or discussions is a great place to start. 

Respect names and pronouns
Using the correct name and pronouns is one of the simplest and most important ways to show respect. Sharing your own pronouns can also help normalize this practice. 

Speak up when it matters
If you hear misinformation or harmful comments, challenge them when it’s safe to do so. Allyship includes using your voice. 

Show up for your community
Attend campus events, support trans-led initiatives, and engage with spaces that promote inclusion. 

Reflect and grow
Consider how your everyday actions contribute to the kind of campus environment you want to be part of. 

Resources

There are several spaces on campus that offer support, connection, and community: 

• Glow Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity – A student-run space offering peer support, events, advocacy, and resources for 2SLGBTQ+ students.
• Women’s Centre – Provides an inclusive and supportive environment for women and trans students, with programming, resources, and peer support.
• Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Anti-Racism (EDI-R) – Offers campus-wide initiatives, education, and support related to equity and inclusion.

Moving Beyond One Day

Trans Day of Visibility is an important moment of recognition, but meaningful change happens through ongoing action. 

Creating a more inclusive campus means: 

• Supporting trans students year-round  
• Advocating for safer and more equitable spaces  
• Continuing to learn, listen, and grow 

TDOV is about celebrating identity, resilience, and community. while also asking an important question: 

How can we show up for trans people, not just on March 31, but every day?
