WUSA 101: GRT U-Pass

People wait at a light rail station with signs for Conestoga and Fairway; colorful doodles and a WUSA 101 GRT U-Pass sticker overlay the image.

What is the GRT U-Pass?

The U-Pass is a student bus pass made possible through negotiations between WUSA and Grand River Transit and can save you over $850 per term. This pass provides you with unlimited rides through the GRT’s safe and reliable public transit system. Fully integrated into your WatCard, just tap it when you get on the bus, or before riding the ION.

Who can use it?

All full-time students are eligible for the U-Pass. The fees are automatically charged as part of your fees for each academic term.

Some conditions that may affect your access to the GRT U-Pass are that you are a GBDA or Aviation Student. You will not be automatically charged with your academic term fees, but you are able to purchase the pass at the discounted rate at our SLC or DC Turnkey Desk. If you have a new WatCard or just became fee-arranged, tap verification systems take between 2-4 days to update before you are able to use your GRT U-Pass. Part-time students are also able to enroll in this program.

You can find more information about who is eligible, how to opt-in if you’re a part-time, and more at GRT U-Pass – Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association.

Using the GRT

When using the GRT, first locate the appropriate bus stop or ION station for the route you want to take. You will need to have your WatCard with you and have fees arranged with the GRT U-Pass. If you don’t have your WatCard or are not fees-arranged, you are able to pay with cash or coins, or by purchasing discounted tickets from the Turnkey Desk. When the bus or ION is coming to a stop, ensure you are at a safe distance from the vehicle. If you’re riding a bus, enter the bus, and tap your WatCard on the card scanner on the fare box. If you are using the ION, tape your WatCard at the card reader at either end of the station. Once the ION arrives, wait for passengers to disembark from the ION before you enter.  (Tip: Avoid storing your WatCard in the back of your phone case if your phone has a magnet in it, as it can interfere with the magnetic strip within your WatCard.)

Where can you go?

Students can travel anywhere the GRT travels. Besides going to class and back, Waterloo and Kitchener offer so much to check out. Want to go for a nice little stroll? Check out Waterloo Park. If you’re in the mood for some shopping, Conestoga Mall is filled with a variety of stores for all your needs. If you want to stroll outside and shop, you want to check out St. Jacob’s Farmer’s Market. Waterloo also hosts many free events throughout the year you can check out at Explore Waterloo Region.
