WUSA 101: Clubs & Discovering Your Community

Three geese stand on snowy grass at sunset, with bare trees silhouetted against the colorful sky, celebrating the undefinable beauty of nature's evening spectacle.

When you think about student life at the University of Waterloo, academics might come to mind first, but what really brings campus to life is the vibrant network of WUSA clubs. Whether you’re passionate about gaming, sustainability, cultural exchange, religious exploration, creative expression, or community service, there’s a club for you. And if not, you can start one yourself!

WUSA clubs are student-run groups supported by the WUSA. They serve as hubs for connection, exploration, and leadership beyond the classroom, providing a way for students to pursue their interests and build friendships within a supportive community. With over 200 clubs across categories like academic, cultural, charity, creative arts, environment, health, media, politics, religion, and games, there’s something for everyone.

Every term, students get a chance to discover and connect with clubs through the Clubs & Societies Fair, hosted in the Student Life Centre. This is your best opportunity to meet club reps, learn about their events and initiatives, and find your fit.

This fall, the Clubs and Societies Fair is happening on September 18 from 11 AM – 3 PM and September 19 from 11 AM – 2 PM.

How the Clubs System Works

Running behind the scenes is a comprehensive system that supports clubs from start to finish, powered by WUSA:

  • Support Services: Clubs can get help with event planning, insurance coverage, marketing, and venue booking, including space in the SLC and other campus facilities.
  • Financial Management: WUSA handles club banking, cash and cheque processing, and oversees sponsorship agreements to help clubs stay organized and accountable.
  • Club Organization: Each club has its own executive team, typically consisting of a President, Vice President, Treasurer, Marketing, and other roles. Executive positions are recruited each semester, often via social media or open applications.

Joining an Existing Club

Getting involved is simple:

  1. Browse the Clubs Directory at joinaclub.wusa.ca to find clubs that interest you.
  2. Attend the Clubs & Societies Fair early each term to meet members and sign up in person. Not all clubs attend the fair, but you can always reach out via their email or socials wich can be found in the Clubs Directory.
  3. Follow clubs on Instagram, Discord, or other platforms—they often post updates, event invites, and exec openings. You can also follow @wusaclubs where we share club events and more!
  4. Apply for an Executive Role if you’re interested in taking on leadership—many clubs post calls for new execs each term.

How to Start a New Club
