From Awareness to Action: Preventing Sexual Violence on Campus

Every May, we come together to recognize Gender-Based and Sexual Violence (GBSV) Prevention Month—an opportunity to educate, raise awareness, and foster a campus culture rooted in respect, safety, and consent. This month isn’t just about post-incident support—it’s about stopping harm before it starts by challenging toxic norms, recognizing boundaries, and taking accountability.

During the Fall 2023 term, we conducted a survey to better understand student perspectives on safety. Out of 185 respondents to a question on safety concerns, more than half—100 students—identified gender-based and sexual violence as a key concern related to their identity. Many shared feelings of vulnerability, particularly around their gender identity, and expressed fear about walking alone at night. This data, along with other findings from our survey, clearly show that gender-based sexual violence remains a serious concern for our community. It’s a reminder that we all have a role to play in creating a safer environment and preventing harm before it happens.

Prevention Starts With You

This year’s campaign is focused on reflection and learning about what health, respectful interactions look like and the role we all must play in building safer communities.

Throughout May, the WUSA Advocacy Team will be hosting booths every Wednesday from 12:00–2:30 PM in the SLC Marketplace, sharing educational resources and promoting conversations about boundaries, consent, and respectful relationships.

Get Informed: Resources You Can Use

Whether you’re looking to better understand consent, challenge harmful behaviors, or support someone in need, the following resources are here to guide you:

  • 🔴 Reclaim the Red Zone: Although traditionally focused on the high-risk “Red Zone” period in the fall, the insights are relevant year-round. Learn more about identifying risk factors and how to interrupt cycles of harm: Reclaim the Red Zone
  • 📊 Student Safety Report: Data from WUSA’s RSP on Student Safety reveals that many students are unsure of what constitutes consent or how to intervene as a bystander. Education is key to changing this. Read more: Student Safety Report
  • Take the Consent Quiz: Test your knowledge about consent and healthy relationships! Everyone who completes the Are You the Red Flag Quiz by May 31st will be entered to win a $50 Uber Eats gift card, or one of 4 $15 Tim Hortons gift cards.

Campus Events & Workshops

The Sexual Violence Prevention & Response Office (SVPRO) is also hosting events throughout May. These are a great way to get involved, learn strategies for creating safer spaces, and connect with others committed to prevention. Check out the full lineup here: SVPRO Events.

Let’s work together to build a culture of respect and safety. We all have the ability to learn and do better. By starting conversations, seeking out education, and committing to prevention, we can help make our campus a safer place for everyone.
