September Board Meeting Recap

WUSA’s monthly Board meeting was held on September 23, 2025. Here’s a run down of everything that was discussed:
- The Board discussed proposed changes to WUSA’s Elections and Referenda Procedures and asked the Elections and Referenda Committee (ERC) to review:
- Whether section 12.2(b) should apply to all referenda
- Rules around club endorsements for candidates
- The 2,900-signature threshold for referendum petitions
- The Board voted to make the Governance Committee dormant for the rest of the 2025–26 year. A new, temporary Governance Reform Committee will take its place to modernize WUSA’s structure and ensure alignment with long-term goals.
- To strengthen accountability, the Board approved the use of a third-party professional to coordinate the Executive Director’s annual evaluation, ensuring a consistent and transparent process, with results being confidentially shared with the Board.
- The Board approved its 2025–26 Workplan outlining priorities and projects for the year. Future Workplans will now be approved each May to help new Boards start their term with a clear direction.
- Directors explored options to better support student leaders in developing governance and advocacy skills. Staff will consult with the Board to bring forward structured learning opportunities that strengthen leadership within WUSA.
- The Board unanimously voted to oppose Section 21.1 of Ontario’s Bill 33: Supporting Children and Students Act (2025). WUSA believes this section undermines student democracy by allowing the provincial government to decide which student fees are mandatory, threatening funding for essential student services. WUSA continues to advocate with OUSA, CASA, and partners to defend student choice and stable funding.
