Navigating Exam Season: Support Resources for You

Students gather outdoors at a table with a UW banner, engaged in activities and exploring support resources during exam season.

As exam season approaches at the University of Waterloo, it’s essential to be aware of the various peer support services available to help you navigate academic challenges and maintain well-being. There is also a new office of the Ombudsperson at the University to help you navigate other challenges as well! Here’s an overview of the resources at your disposal:

Mates

Mates is a peer-support service dedicated to the undergraduate student population. Trained volunteers offer confidential one-on-one sessions to assist with social and academic challenges, as well as low-level mental health concerns and stress. Appointments can last up to an hour and are available in various languages.

Centre for Academic Policy Support (CAPS)

CAPS provides guidance on university policies, procedures, and decision-making structures impacting students. They offer support in navigating academic concerns and ensuring students understand their rights and responsibilities.

Racial Advocacy for Inclusion, Solidarity, and Equity (RAISE)

RAISE focuses on addressing racism and xenophobia while promoting a culture of equity, inclusion, and solidarity. They offer peer support for racialized students, providing a safe space to discuss experiences and challenges.

Women’s Centre

The Women’s Centre aims to create a safe and equitable environment for female identifying students. They offer peer support, resources, and events focusing on gender equity and empowerment.

Glow Centre

The Glow Centre provides peer support, resources, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ students. They offer a welcoming space to discuss issues related to sexual and gender diversity.

Ombudsperson Office

While it’s not a peer support service, the University of Waterloo has recently appointed Whitney Barrett as the new Ombudsperson. Located on the third floor of the Student Life Centre, the Ombuds Office offers support and guidance on University-related concerns and complaints regarding policies, procedures, and decision-making structures impacting students. Students from all faculties and affiliated institutions can book appointments by emailing uwombuds@uwaterloo.ca

Utilizing these peer and other support services can significantly enhance your exam preparation and overall university experience. Don’t hesitate to reach out and make the most of the resources available to you.
