Gender-Based Sexual Violence Month Recap

A table with snacks, pamphlets, and signs, covered by a WUSA Advocacy cloth in a building lobby, raises awareness for Sexual Violence Month.

Throughout May, WUSA’s Advocacy team collaborated with the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office (SVPRO) on campus to host an awareness campaign focused on gender-based and sexual violence. With May being Sexual Violence Prevention Month, this year’s campaign focused on prevention and education, debunking myths, and clarifying facts around consent and sexual violence to create space for dialogue and learning.

Notably this year, we boothed in Athletics spaces, allowing us to have insightful conversations with different student demographics about consent and gender-based and sexual violence. Our boothing included a pledge wall, where students shared their personal commitments to making their community safer for everyone and the “Are You the Red Flag” quiz which encouraged conversations and opportunities to learn about consent.

As we move into Pride month, the focus shifts from awareness to celebration – with a spotlight on joy, identity, and 2SLGBTQIA+ community resilience. You can find a full list of how you can celebrate Pride with WUSA at Celebrate Pride Month with WUSA – Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association.
