Change Engine 2024: Milestone Update

At a vibrant Live Competition Night, a speaker with a headset captivates the audience amidst decorative stars and circles.

It’s been a full term since our inaugural Change Engine pitch competition that was held in December 2024, so let’s see what the winners of each stream have been up to since winning the competition!

If you missed the event or want to learn more, you can check out the recap at The Change Engine Recap: Empowering Student Innovation.

Stream 1: WYGO

Led by Christopher Oka and Jocelyne Murphy, WYGO seeks to combat student loneliness by organizing mystery events. These events engage their participants in activities without prior knowledge of the event details, fostering organic social interactions. Through mentorship and coaching, WYGO empowers participants to transition from passive attendees to active community builders. The funding received through the Change Engine allowed them to take bigger risks and build a bigger platform. Both Christopher and Jocelyne plan to pursue WYGO full-time now that they’ve graduated, and we can’t wait to see what they accomplish!

So far, they’ve hosted 4 mystery events and are planning to work on this full time after graduation! They also met with WUSA Events staff to learn more about event planning and logistics, specifically in Waterloo.

You can see some of their past events highlighted on their Instagram, @wygoworld. If you’re interested in partnering with WYGO, you can reach out at wygo@wygo.world.

Stream 2: EcoPlastic

Led by Dev Katyal, EcoPlastic AI is an interactive mobile app designed to promote sustainable recycling habits. This app allows users to scan plastic waste and receive real time guidance on proper disposal. Additionally, it features educational modules, quizzes, and sustainability tips with the long-term goal of reducing plastic waste on campus by 30% within three years.

Three phones display an eco app; text reads "Save Our Planet" and "One small change, one big impact."

So far, Dev has launched his app and is focusing on boosting Instagram engagement. Follow along at @ecoplasticapp

Stream 3: Campus Safety

Led by Katie Traynor, this project seeks to address student safety concerns, especially for those walking alone at night. By identifying and improving high-risk areas on campus, this project proposes better lighting, enhanced surveillance, and an expanded Walk Safe program to create a more secure and inclusive campus environment. Katie brought this forward at WUSA’s Annual Members Meeting in March and it was approved! She will be meeting with stakeholders to discuss the proposals as well as put out calls for volunteers soon too.

Keep an eye on wusa.ca/jobs-opportunities as the volunteer positions will be posted there.
