Position: WalkSafe Volunteer (Pilot Program)
Location: Main UWaterloo Campus (Student Life Centre)
Time Commitment: Minimum one shift per week, 7:00PM–10:30PM (Monday–Friday), throughout the month of March 2026
Onboarding Requirement: Mandatory Saturday training session in late February
Reporting to: WalkSafe Coordinators and Manager, Advocacy and Stakeholder Relations

Position Overview
WalkSafe Volunteers support WUSA’s March 2026 pilot service, which helps undergraduates feel safer while moving around campus at night.
Volunteers provide evening walks to undergraduate students, work in pairs under a coordinator’s direction, follow safety protocols, report concerns, and complete required documentation. Volunteers may also place phone calls for students walking or waiting for a bus.
This is a great opportunity for students looking to build skills in peer support, leadership, safety awareness, and community engagement.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide safe walking accompaniment to undergraduates across main campus, following approved procedures and routes.
- Provide phone-based support to students requesting a call, following approved communication and safety protocols.
- Check in with Coordinators before and after each walk and follow all dispatch and communication protocols.
- Uphold safety guidelines, including knowing when to pause or end a walk and when to escalate concerns, and knowing when to make appropriate referrals in accordance with training and established protocols.
- Represent the WalkSafe program in a friendly, professional, and supportive manner.
- Participate in required onboarding training (Saturday in late February).
- Maintain reliability and commit to at least one shift per week (preferably two) throughout the pilot (March 2 – April 2).
- Contribute feedback to help evaluate and improve the program.
- Other duties as assigned by Coordinators or the Manager.
Qualifications
Volunteers must:
- Be a current undergraduate student at the University of Waterloo.
- Be comfortable walking outdoors on campus in evening conditions.
- Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and strong judgment skills.
- Be able to follow safety procedures and respond appropriately to unexpected situations.
- Be available for the required Saturday onboarding session in late February.
- Be able to work at least one weekday evening shift per week.
- Be willing to complete a police records check prior to starting the role.
- Experience in peer support, student leadership, or safety-related roles is helpful but not required.
Working Conditions
- Volunteers work in pairs and walk outdoors across main campus in evening hours.
- Shifts run from 7:00PM–10:30PM, Monday to Friday.
- Volunteers may be exposed to varying weather conditions.
- Requires sustained attention to surroundings and adherence to safety protocols.
- Communication with Coordinators and peers is frequent throughout each shift.
