Position: WalkSafe Coordinator (Pilot Program)
Location: Student Life Centre (SLC), Main UWaterloo Campus
Time Requirement: Weeknights, 6:30PM–10:30PM (2-3 shifts per week)
Reporting to: Manager, Advocacy and Stakeholder Relations
Hourly Wage: $18.50
Employment Period: March 2 – April 2, 2026

Position Overview 

The Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association (WUSA) is launching a  WalkSafe pilot in March 2026. WalkSafe is student-led service that supports undergraduate students walking on main campus during evening hours.

WalkSafe Coordinators ensure the nightly operations run smoothly and safely. Working from the Student Life Centre’s central dispatch location, Coordinators manage volunteer dispatch, respond to student requests, maintain communication with volunteers, and ensure all reporting and safety procedures are followed.
This short-term role is ideal for students interested in peer support, safety programming, community engagement, or hands-on coordination experience.

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Participate in onboarding and training WalkSafe volunteers.
  • Oversee nightly operations of the WalkSafe pilot, including volunteer scheduling, dispatch, check-ins, and communication.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for volunteers and students using the service.
    Receive intake requests and coordinate timely volunteer response.
  • Ensure all walks follow established safety protocols, escalation steps, and route guidelines.
  • Document usage data, incidents, and daily operational notes accurately and consistently.
  • Support volunteer teams by providing guidance, troubleshooting issues, and coordinating routes.
  • Maintain communication with the Manager, Advocacy and Stakeholder Relations regarding nightly updates and any concerns.
  • Assist with pilot promotion and help raise awareness of the WalkSafe service on campus.
  • Participate in pilot evaluation by providing feedback and contributing to post-program reporting.
    Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Applicants must be enrolled as undergraduate, fee-paying students at the University of Waterloo.

Candidates should also demonstrate:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to respond calmly and make sound decisions in situations requiring problem-solving or quick judgment.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and comfort working evening hours.
  • Strong attention to detail, especially when documenting incidents or intake information.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with volunteers, WUSA staff, and campus partners.
  • Comfort providing peer support and fostering a positive, safety-focused environment.
  • Experience in peer support, leadership, safety roles, or campus programming is an asset but not required.

    Working Conditions

Physical Demands

  • Primarily stationed at the SLC dispatch desk, with periods of sitting and close monitoring.
  • Occasional walking on campus to support volunteers or address operational needs.
  • Frequent use of phones or radios for communication.
  • Light lifting of program materials.

Environmental Conditions

  • Evening shifts (6:30PM–10:30PM), Monday to Friday, for the duration of the pilot.
  • In-person role with frequent interactions in a busy campus environment.
  • Work involves intake, dispatching volunteers, responding to calls, and managing real-time safety information.

Sensory Demands

  • Sustained auditory and visual attention required for calls, dispatch tools, volunteer check-ins, and intake requests.
  • High focus needed when completing reporting and documentation.

Mental Demands

  • Requires multitasking (intake, dispatch, communication, documentation).
  • Occasional exposure to sensitive or stressful situations regarding student safety.
  • Requires calm decision-making and adherence to safety procedures.
