Celebrate Safely and Responsibly This St. Patrick’s Day
St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner, and we know you’re excited to celebrate! ☘️🎩
This year is a bit different than other years as the City of Waterloo has been granted an injunction that means anyone violating the Nuisance By-law may be subject to criminal charges. Although there are other mechanisms the city could use, the injunction was granted by the Ontario Superior Court.
So… what does this mean for you? The legal risks of participating this year are a bit higher, so if you decide to attend a party at some point between March 14 to 17, keep in mind the risks both for yourself and the impact that those parties have on the greater community. Regardless of how you are celebrating, we want to make sure you have a great time while keeping safety in mind. Here’s how you can enjoy the day responsibly while looking out for yourself, your peers, and your community!
Remember that consent is essential in all interactions! The F.R.I.E.S. model (Freely given, Reversible, Informed, Enthusiastic, and Specific) is a great framework to keep in mind 🍟. Consent applies to everything from hugging someone to sharing a drink, and it should always be clear and mutual. Check out our Instagram for more resources on consent and how to support a culture of respect and safety.
St. Patrick’s Day brings a lively energy to the city, but it’s important to remember that we share our spaces with others. Keep noise levels respectful, clean up after yourself, and be mindful of your impact on the community. While it’s a day for celebration, we all have a role to play in ensuring our celebrations aren’t a burden on our neighbours. The effect of your actions, whether it’s picking up garbage or keeping your noise levels down, help create a safer and more enjoyable atmosphere for everyone, including those who aren’t celebrating. A good time shouldn’t come at the expense of others’ well-being!
If you are heading out on St. Patrick’s Day, consider bringing a few key safety items:
- 🥤 Drink covers – Protect your beverage to prevent drink tampering
- WUSA Advocacy will be giving away free drink covers on March 11, from 12-2 PM in the SLC! Swing by to grab one.
- 🌊 Water bottle – Stay hydrated throughout the night.
- 📱 Phone charger or power bank – Ensure you can contact friends and get home safely.
Other safety tips:
- 🚕 Plan for a safe way home. Arrange for a designated driver, public transit, or a rideshare service in advance.
- 🍔 Eat before heading out and stay hydrated!
- 📢 Be an active bystander and look out for your peers! If you see something, and it’s safe to do so, say something. Otherwise, find someone who can help.
- 👀 Trust your gut. If something feels off, leave the situation, and seek help if necessary.
