St. Patrick’s Day is today and we know how popular it is in Waterloo. With the crowds and excitement comes our reminder to stay safe and be respectful to each other and your community during the celebrations.

A Very Brief History of the Day 

St. Patrick’s Day is a Christian-based cultural and religious celebration held on March 17th, the death date of Saint Patrick. Saint Patrick was a patron saint who brought Christianity to Ireland.  

It’s important to be mindful and ensure your celebrations are not culturally insensitive. We recognize many celebrate this day with green beer and alcohol but want to highlight that style of celebrating does not necessarily align with cultural tradition. Plus, there are all kinds of ways to recognize the day – Eat Irish food, drink made-in-Ireland beverages, watch Irish movies read Irish literature or listen to Irish music. Also, binge drinking is dangerous and can put you and your friends in unsafe situations. 

 

Remember, Consent Matters! 

When it comes to consent, it’s easy – yes, means yes. Consent is not the absence of a no. It is the presence of a clear, affirmative, expression of interest, desire, and wants. Consent involves all parties, with each person setting their boundaries or sharing their desires. Consent is respectful, mutual decision-making and drugs and alcohol impact decision-making and, therefore, blur consent. When drugs and alcohol are involved, clear consent cannot be obtained.

Some dos and don’ts for staying safe during St. Patrick’s Day

Drink water & stay hydrated  Eat 3 proper meals  Bring snacks that have carbs for energy  Use the buddy system  Attend with people you know & trust  Ask for consent  Practice everything in moderation  Celebrate in groups, at a home, or at a licensed establishment  Charge your phone & bring a portable charger  Dress appropriately for the weather  Plan your day out beforehand – including your ride!  If you see something, say something! Consent culture is everyone’s responsibility

Bring valuables  Leave your drink unattended  Drive under the influence  Be publicly indecent or participate in lewd behavior  Drink in public  Binge drink  Leave your group or travel alone in crowds  Hassle by-law or police officers doing their job  Hassle members of our community
