WUSA 2021 Accessibility Report

The University of Waterloo’s Accessibility Services strives to provide accommodations and help students with their accessibility requirements. To confirm students are happy with the services provided by the accessibility department, WUSA conducted an Accessibility Survey to better understand students experiences and opinions about the services they have been receiving. The 2021 Accessibility Report displays the results from the findings of the survey and explains what the next steps are in terms of improving accessibility experience for students.

We interviewed WUSA’s Accessibility Commissioner, Vicky Ikeno, to get more information about the report.

Can you give us an overview of what the accessibility report is about?

The accessibility report is about identifying areas around the university that need improvement. This was not limited to services and buildings; it was completely inclusive of all areas that make up University of Waterloo.

Why is it important for students to read and know about the accessibility report?

It is important for students to read the report to see what WUSA is trying to do to help improve accessibility for those with disability needs. Also, if there is something not included, students can contact WUSA or myself and I will bring it up to the right people. Although the survey sample size may be considered small, the research is still ethical and empirical based.

What is the most important aspect of the Accessibility report?

The most important aspect about the accessibility report is that the report will be used to create the groundwork for the advocacy that needs to be done. WUSA is always willing to listen and make improvements.

How is the accessibility report going to help students?

The accessibility report is going to help students by making buildings and services more inclusive and accessible to those who are facing disabilities or know someone that is. It also makes sure that the services are being held accountable.

What can students do if they want to learn more?

The students can contact WUSA to learn more on WUSA’s future plans for accessibility at WUSA and the University of Waterloo.

So, what’s next in terms of the Accessibility Plan for UWaterloo? Strategies for making campus more accessible will be made clearer in the 2021-2022 WUSA Annual Plan to be shared in the coming weeks.
