Position: Student Advocacy Support

Position Overview

WUSA Advocacy works closely with undergraduate students to understand their experiences and advocate for their needs on campus and beyond. The Student Advocacy Support role plays a vital part in advancing this mission by contributing to the development and implementation of advocacy initiatives that align with WUSA’s long range plan and advocacy goals.

This position supports the Advocacy and Outreach Team by assisting with initiatives related to key student concerns, which may include wellness, safety, inclusion, housing and other issues that impact quality of student life and education.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide support to WUSA’s advocacy initiatives and other student-level advocacy in an empathic and anti-oppressive manner.
  • Assist with advocacy projects through administrative tasks such as conducting environmental scans, drafting documents, attending meetings, and offering general project support
  • Engage with students by participating in intercepts, boothing in the SLC, and supporting advocacy initiatives and events.
  • Establish and maintain strong professional working relationships with WUSA staff, and relevant stakeholders
  • Represent WUSA by serving as a connection point between the student body and the organization
  • Collaborate with the Advocacy Outreach team to provide a student-centered perspective on key initiatives and discussions.
  • Help plan, coordinate, and co-host events and programming related to specific advocacy priorities.
  • Support the creation, editing, and research of advocacy position statements and articles aligned with WUSA’s annual plan

This is a hybrid role. While some projects can be completed virtually, you will be expected to be on campus for events
Must be available during some standard work hours for daytime events (Monday-Friday)
There is flexibility with the start date, and an option to work remotely until September.

Note: The position spans two academic terms. Students on co-op during one of the terms are expected to be available outside regular work hours and occasional daytime availability during their academic terms.

OTHER GENERAL DUTIES

  • Adhere to WUSA’s corporate by-laws, policies and procedures, particularly to the organization’s mission.
  • Practice professionalism and impartiality when handling sensitive personal information.
  • Strict adherence to Health & Safety laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Work in an organized manner where detail, accuracy, and confidentiality are critical.
  • Attend meetings and committees when required.
  • Work with members of the Advocacy and Outreach team to build strong relationships between WUSA and University of Waterloo.
  • Mandatory attendance at staff meetings and WUSA-related training days.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be currently enrolled at the University of Waterloo as an undergraduate student and be a fee-paying student of WUSA
  • Candidates must also be able to demonstrate the following:
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively engage with students, staff, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently, and balance multiple competing priorities while maintaining quality of work and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and establish professional relationships.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills to ensure accuracy.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive information.
  • Understanding of advocacy principles and experience in supporting advocacy initiatives.
  • Proficiency in documenting and drafting necessary materials and reports.
