Waterloo, ON – April 8, 2020 – With the impacts of COVID-19 weighing heavily on our students, the Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association (WUSA) reached out to the University of Waterloo, inviting them to partner with us in the creation of a Student Emergency Support Fund. We were pleased to see the alumni engagement campaign officially launch Monday, with well over $200,000 in donations already! We look forward to how these funds will help our students through this unprecedented time.

Using funds from this fiscal year’s expendable allowance of the Student Life Endowment Fund (SLEF), WUSA’s Internal Funding Committee agreed to kick this off with $30,0000 in initial capital. Since then, and the official launch of the alumni campaign, the University has agreed to match this contribution, honouring the commitment and investment shown by our student leaders.

With the University supporting this fund through the donor campaign, alumni and other external donors can now receive charitable tax receipts for their contributions, while making a meaningful difference for thousands of students struggling with financial hardship as a result of COVID-19.  We expect to see the application in the coming days.
