Moving forward, the Volunteer Centre website and its related services will be discontinued until further notice due to a steady decrease in interest over the past two years. The system has become obsolete and is in need of a major overhaul for both branding and usability. However, the costs exceed what is available within the current year’s budget, in part due to the opt-out service under the new system.

The original vision for the centre was to have a physical location where people could walk in to seek opportunities. During the Volunteer Centre’s pilot years, there were less than 10 visitors per term. In addition, attracting volunteers to take on leadership roles proved difficult with low numbers of applicants.

Services similar to what the Volunteer Centre offered can be found through on-going existing sites such as LEADS and the KW Volunteer Action Centre. The discontinuation of the Volunteer Centre website will ensure that services are not being duplicated. Ultimately, this will provide further funding and resources which will be used towards future diverse, meaningful experiences for undergraduate students.
