Waterloo, ON – On October 6, Minister Romano and Minister Tibollo announced $19.25 million into mental health supports for 2020-2021. Students are thrilled to see an increase of $3.25 million compared to last year.

In 2019, the American College Health Association National College Health Assessment II found that in the last year, 88% of UWaterloo students had felt overwhelmed by everything they had to do, 48% of students experienced depression that impacted their ability to function and 16% had seriously considered suicide. Alongside conversations on our campus, this clearly identifies mental health as a key concern for the Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association, and thus a top priority in our advocacy efforts. Several of WUSA’s recent government submissions highlighted the need for investment in student mental health, and this announcement gives us the confidence that the government is listening. As a result, on behalf of over 34,000 students, we express our sincerest thanks for this investment and look forward to continued work on critical issues for post-secondary students.
