Waterloo, ON – September 16, 2020 – The provincial government recently announced a six-million-dollar investment toward the institution of policing. Students of the University of Waterloo are concerned that current strategies for the funding of law enforcement deprioritize funding available for upstream social services. Together with four student unions across Ontario, we’re calling on the government to fund upstream, community-driven programs to reduce the need for incident response services and build healthier, safer communities in the first place.

WUSA executive reached out to partners across the province, receiving support from McMaster Students Union, University of Toronto Students' Union, Laurentian University Students' General Association and the University of Ottawa Students’ Union Executive. Collectively, we represent more than 170,000 undergraduate students.

As today’s youth, we stand with our community members across Canada in their calls to invest in community-driven solutions that are developed with healing and accountability in mind.
